Typo, an Australian stationery and gifting brand and part of the Cotton On Group, has announced a full withdrawal from Britain, with all remaining stores and its UK website due to close by early 2027. Cotton On cited 'ongoing high rent and operating costs, combined with softer sales' as making the business unviable after around ten years in the UK. Store closures will be staggered, with staff already notified and transition support pledged. The exit is the latest blow to Britain's high streets, where dozens of retail chains have collapsed in 2026.

Typo's Eldon Square branch in Newcastle already closed on 9 October, with 13 stores remaining including branches in Canterbury and Bluewater.

TG Jones, the rebranded WH Smith, is separately closing upwards of 150 shops, and Claire's wound up all 154 of its UK standalone stores earlier this year following its collapse into administration.

Cotton On Group says its other brands — Cotton On, Cotton On Body and Cotton On Kids — will continue trading in the UK through online and wholesale channels only.
