Austria expels four Russian diplomats over suspected espionage in Vienna as Moscow warns a 'reaction is unavoidable'

Austria's Russian embassy accounted for three of the four expelled diplomats; the fourth was attached to Moscow's OSCE delegation covering military security and arms control. Austrian security services identified all four individuals, who were subsequently declared personae non gratae and given days to leave the country. Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Dmitry Lyubinsky told TASS a 'reaction is unavoidable'. The latest expulsions bring to 18 the total number of Russian diplomats Austria has removed since 2020.

In May, Vienna expelled three diplomats over an 'antenna forest' discovered on Russian diplomatic rooftops.

Russia's embassy accused Austria of 'thoughtlessly following the West's anti-Russian policy'.

Split between Allied sectors after World War Two, Vienna has built an enduring reputation as a centre of espionage.
