Badenoch says Chancellor John Healey should resign if his first Budget fails to set out a path to 3% defence spending

John Healey's first Budget next week is expected to be little more than a 'down-payment' on defence, with any roadmap to 3% of GDP likely to be pushed back to a spending review next autumn. Healey stepped down as Defence Secretary in June, citing the Treasury's 'unwilling[ness]' to fund Britain's defence. Shadow Defence Secretary James Cartlidge said that failing to produce a 3% plan would constitute 'a dereliction of duty'.

Kemi Badenoch said Labour should call a general election if Healey cannot deliver.

A Savanta poll found 44% back cutting benefits to boost defence spending.

A former Army chief has also told Healey to set out his path to 3%.
