Nikki, 50, has revealed that her mother Joyce passed away earlier this year, confirming the 'family matters' that caused her to walk out of the Bake Off tent mid-episode during Tuesday's Bread Week. Channel 4 aired an emotional tribute to Joyce at the episode's end, offering condolences to Nikki and her family. Joyce's health deteriorated rapidly, leaving the family unprepared for how quickly things changed.

Joyce was the reason Nikki took up baking, and wept with joy when her daughter was selected for the show, telling her: 'This is your time.'

Nikki left after the Signature challenge and did not return for the Showstopper, with Paul Hollywood hinting another baker would still be eliminated.

Fellow contestant Molly was sent home in the same episode, meaning Nikki's departure did not spare anyone else from elimination.
