Barbara Barrie, the Oscar-nominated 'Breaking Away' mother and 'Barney Miller' actress, ends her life with medical aid at 95

Barbara Barrie, the acclaimed stage and screen actress, died on Wednesday at her Manhattan home aged 95 after choosing medically assisted death following a terminal cancer diagnosis. Her daughter, Jane Harnick, confirmed the circumstances. Barrie's career spanned seven decades across Broadway, film and television, earning her both a Tony nomination and an Oscar nod.

She won best actress at Cannes in 1964 for 'One Potato, Two Potato', playing a white woman who marries a Black man and fights a custody battle.

On Broadway, she earned a Tony nomination in the original 1970 production of Stephen Sondheim's 'Company', one of a then-record 14 nominations the show received.

Born Barbara Berman in Chicago in 1931, she only moved to New York to follow a boyfriend — and ended up one of America's most decorated character actresses.
