Barbara Barrie, the Oscar-nominated Breaking Away star, dies aged 95 with medical assistance under the New York law she championed
Barbara Barrie, who once said she only moved to New York for a boyfriend and stumbled into acting almost by accident, died aged 95 on Wednesday.
Barbara Barrie, who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and was also living with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, died at her Manhattan home on Wednesday under New York's Medical Aid in Dying Act, which took effect on 5 August. Her daughter Jane Harnick confirmed the death was medically assisted; Barrie's agent Gary Gersh said she had been a proponent and advocate of the law throughout her final years.
Barrie won the Best Actress prize at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival for 'One Potato, Two Potato', a film about an interracial relationship.
She originated the role of Sarah in Stephen Sondheim's 'Company' on Broadway in 1970, earning a Tony nomination for best featured actress in a musical.
Co-star Shaun Cassidy paid tribute on Instagram, thanking Barrie for her 'wisdom, kindness and boundless talent'.
