Baroness Jane Campbell of Surbiton made history in the House of Lords on Tuesday by delivering a speech in her own AI-recreated voice — after illness progressively robbed her of her natural speech. Campbell, 67, has suffered from spinal muscular atrophy since the age of one. She worked with voice technology firm ElevenLabs, providing old recordings so it could recreate her former voice, speaking style and pitch. She told the chamber: 'This is my voice, my style, and my words.'

Campbell has relied on an assistant to read her Lords speeches since 2012, when the procedures committee granted a special exemption to a 1707 rule barring non-peers from speaking in the chamber.

'May I introduce you to Baroness Campbell Mark 2,' she told peers, before her AI voice broadcast her address on the government's social care plans.
