The University of Bath has commissioned an independent investigation after "frightening" rumours circulated on social media alleging members of its rugby club planned to spike female students' drinks during Freshers' Week. The claims spread after a screenshot showed an anonymous student describing overhearing men discussing spiking plans at a pub. The university says no spiking incidents have yet been reported but is taking the allegations "extremely seriously." A new student group, Bath Against SA, has been formed and is planning a public demonstration.
The university rugby club and students' union denied involvement, stating they had not "organised, promoted, or attempted to arrange any activity of this nature."
Bath has increased nightclub security and will hold on-campus safety stalls over the next two weeks focused on preventing harassment, bullying and sexual misconduct.
The university is also launching a wider review of sports club culture, warning that if evidence of wrongdoing is found, "disciplinary measures will be implemented robustly."
