Bavarian minister vows Hitler's Eagle's Nest will 'under no circumstances remain a ruin' after the fire that gutted it

Prosecutor Rainer Vietze said investigators are examining a possible political motive, although a psychiatric assessment of the suspect revealed signs of mental distress. The 33-year-old German, who has connections to the region, was apprehended on a motorcycle near the Kehlsteinhaus near Berchtesgaden. He has since been placed in a psychiatric facility. Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said: 'It is important that we continue our work of remembrance.'

Around 200 emergency personnel battled the flames at 1,834 metres, in heavy snow.

Police said there are no signs anyone other than the arrested man was involved.

The lodge was built for Martin Bormann in 1938 and survived the war, including an RAF raid.
