Eagle's Nest must be rebuilt to stop neo-Nazis, Bavaria's interior minister says, after arson suspect caught fleeing flames

Joachim Herrmann told reporters at the site "We're not going to leave a ruin there" and promised "a sensible solution," warning that abandoning the structure could attract far-right pilgrims. Police stopped a 33-year-old German man riding a motorbike down the mountain as crews raced up. Prosecutors say he showed signs of mental illness and are sending him to a psychiatric facility. They still have not ruled out a political motive, given the building's history.

Around 200 firefighters battled the blaze at 1,834 metres during the season's first heavy snowfall.

The Kehlsteinhaus was completed in 1938, and Hitler visited it at least 14 times.

It had run as a tourist restaurant since 1952, with an exhibit on its Nazi history.
