The BBC is to axe BBC Three for a SECOND time, shut the BBC Scotland channel and cut 100 news jobs
Even after these closures, the corporation is reportedly not halfway to its £500m savings target, with only about £200m cut so far. Radio 4 Extra will also be scrapped when all three go dark in spring 2027. BBC Three moved online in 2016, returned in 2022, and typically draws just 4% of the UK population live in a week. The director-general admitted 'that means tough choices'.
BBC Scotland's News at Seven, which airs nightly, will be discontinued rather than transferred to iPlayer.
The BBC blames falling TV licence fee payments and looks set to cut up to 2,000 jobs.
The journalists' union NUJ warns the BBC 'risks entering inescapable doom spiral' with cuts.
