Beluga rescued from Canada's shuttered Marineland dies at SeaWorld San Diego after four others died in Chicago

Cyprus, a nine-year-old male, refused food in the two days leading up to his death on Sunday, less than two months after arriving in California. An ultrasound showed his intestinal tract was not functioning normally, pointing to a life-threatening condition. Veterinarians kept watch through the night but could not save him. Up until his sudden deterioration, he had been feeding consistently and interacting with his trainers.
Cyprus and fellow belugas Xavier and Jasper made the 2,500-plus-mile journey in cold-water units in August.
Marineland closed following financial difficulties and activist criticism over the treatment of its belugas.
A full necropsy is planned, and its findings will go to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
