Beluga whale rescued from Canada's shuttered Marineland dies at SeaWorld San Diego weeks after its transfer, the sixth to die

Cyprus, a nine-year-old male beluga, stopped eating on Saturday, and an ultrasound showed his intestinal tract was failing to work normally. SeaWorld vets and animal care staff battled through the night, but he died soon afterwards. He had been flown to San Diego on August 22 from Marineland of Canada in Ontario. The park says belugas can hide the health problems they are suffering.

Four Marineland whales died at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium, and a fifth died at Oceanogràfic València.

Marineland closed in 2024 amid a funding crisis and warned the whales could be euthanised.

SeaWorld insisted Cyprus 'was eating consistently' and was mixing with two other rescued belugas.
