Bereaved campaigners accuse Matt Hancock of 'cruel lies' after the 'Covid inquiry' rejects his care home 'protective ring' claim

Bereaved campaigners accuse Matt Hancock of 'cruel lies' after the 'Covid inquiry' rejects his care home 'protective ring' claim

More than 43,000 care home residents died with Covid between March 2020 and July 2022, and one civil servant called it 'generational slaughter'. Jean Adamson, whose father died in a care home in April 2020, led the attack on Matt Hancock. The former health secretary had already told the inquiry his ring was 'clearly a piece of rhetoric'. Some carers were reduced to wearing painters' overalls and festival ponchos.

Baroness Heather Hallett said of the ring claim: 'Quite the opposite was true.'

West End star Ruthie Henshall called Hancock's claim 'a load of rubbish' on LBC.

The inquiry has cost over £200m, yet bereaved families brand its recommendations a 'superficial damp squib'.
