Police forced entry into a property on Sawyers Grove, Brentwood, after reports of a damaged door, arresting a man and a woman at around 7.20am on Friday. Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts are examining several small items recovered from inside the address. A 100-metre cordon stretches across much of Sawyers Grove and parts of Sawyers Hall Lane and Highland Avenue.

Around 40 households were ordered to an evacuation point at King George's Playing Fields Pavilion while specialists work.

Resident Michael Page, 84, said he was given no explanation when told to leave: 'They wouldn't tell me anything.'
