Bomb threat forces Israel-to-Vienna flight into emergency landing in Bulgaria
The alert is said to have originated with an anonymous tip from an Austrian citizen who had no connection to the flight. Bulgaria dispatched a MiG-29 fighter jet to shadow the Airbus A320 to Sofia's Vasil Levski airport on Sunday night. All 51 passengers and six crew were evacuated while authorities carried out a search of the aircraft. According to reports, those aboard were a group of young people scheduled to address the United Nations.
The crew triggered the alarm over Romanian airspace and touched down roughly 30 minutes later.
Flight-tracking data shows the jet was transmitting emergency code 7700 as it turned back.
It comes weeks after a Flydubai pilot allegedly tried to hijack a Tel Aviv-bound flight.
