Ben Whishaw, 46, who played Q across three Daniel Craig Bond films, has confirmed he will not appear in the forthcoming 26th instalment directed by Denis Villeneuve. He said the franchise must find new relevance after five years away, adding his Q character felt "unsatisfying" because a hint at his sexuality was never developed.

Callum Turner, Jack Lowden and Josh O'Connor are among those reportedly in contention to replace Daniel Craig as 007.

The new film will be written by 'Peaky Blinders' creator Steven Knight and produced by Amy Pascal and David Heyman.

Whishaw dismissed the fevered speculation over the next Bond's identity as 'deliberate hype' — 'a ploy to create suspense and glamour.'
