The Piper Tomahawk II, registered G-LFSU to Leading Edge Flight Training in Renfrew, left Glasgow Airport at 4.17pm on Friday. It stopped transmitting just 20 minutes later. Police were called to the crash on a hill north-east of Drymen, Stirling, at about 4.45pm. The plane had already flown from Cumbernauld and made a two-hour trip to Newport on Tay that day.

An Air Accidents Investigation Branch team has travelled to the site to gather evidence.

Airspace over Drymen is closed, including to drones, and police warn flying there is a criminal offence.

Glasgow Airport boss Gavin Birch-Williams called it 'a deeply tragic event'.
