Roman Heilman, six, scratched and unclothed after three days alone in freezing Kentucky woodland, was found clutching a small dog roughly a mile and a half from his home by volunteers who rode more than 14 miles through the woods before daylight to reach him.

Roman Heilman, a 6-year-old boy with autism from Louisa, Kentucky, emerged from dense woodland naked, covered in scratches and accompanied by his dog on Tuesday morning, having survived two days alone in rugged terrain. Lawrence County emergency management director Travis Hughes said the boy had been without clothes and cold weather was closing in when searchers finally reached him.

More than 300 volunteers, Kentucky National Guard units and search teams from West Virginia and Ohio combed the woods around the clock using helicopters, drones and horseback riders.

Searchers were instructed to sing Roman's favourite song, 'If You're Happy and You Know It', hoping the familiar tune would draw him out of hiding.
