Scott Luke called his son home for dinner and a stranger answered the phone; he found eight-year-old Riley two streets away, his thumb 'blasted back to his wrist' and part of his hand gone. The Paisley boy had been passing round a firework with friends on 7 November 2022 when it lit, stuck to his palm and exploded within seconds.

Riley Luke, 12, needed help dressing, cutting food and writing, rebuilding strength by colouring in with pencils.

'He's head strong, he doesn't hold back,' says father Scott Luke, as Riley still rides scooters and bikes.

Fireworks are 'incredibly dangerous' unless adults handle them, warns Ian McMeekin, Scottish Fire and Rescue's prevention head.
