Bradford is promised a new railway station in the 2030s, but ministers still cannot say if trains will run through it
The new hub will replace the 1970s Bradford Interchange, whose bus station shut for a year after concrete fell from a car park roof. Transport secretary Heidi Alexander claims it will 'transform how people travel across the North'. No cost has been announced, though the government caps Northern Powerhouse Rail at £45bn. Reform UK's Bradford Council leader Stephen Place called it 'a major milestone'.
Bradford East MP Imran Hussain says it is 'vital' the station is not a terminus.
Northern Powerhouse Rail was first proposed back in 2014, and improvements towards Manchester are not due until the 2040s.
Mayor Tracy Brabin hailed an 'iron-clad commitment' to a city centre station.
