Flávio Bolsonaro lands in Miami after defying a passport order and fleeing Brazil, just as his father did in 2022
Flávio Bolsonaro, son of jailed ex-president Jair, abandoned his demand for annulment of the result by Monday, pledging instead to lead the opposition.Flávio Bolsonaro routed his escape flight through Guayaquil, Ecuador, to avoid Brazilian airspace after the Supreme Court cancelled his passports for ignoring a deadline to surrender them.
Brazilian senator Flávio Bolsonaro, 45, defied a Supreme Court corruption probe order and fled to Miami via Argentina and Ecuador, with Trump telling reporters he "approves" of the move and calling the family "fine people." Bolsonaro's party conceded his defeat to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, but the senator himself has refused to concede and plans to challenge the result.
Brazil's Supreme Court had cancelled Bolsonaro's passports after he missed a deadline to surrender them, citing his "significant financial resources" and flight risk.
Lula condemned the departure, saying Bolsonaro "could have stayed here and proven that the accusations are not true," while branding the flight "shameful."
Flávio's father Jair — now jailed — took the same route after losing to Lula in 2022, retreating to Florida where he stayed for three months before returning home.
