Brazilians vote in a knife-edge runoff as Flávio Bolsonaro, who vows to free his convicted father, takes on Lula

Flávio Bolsonaro won the first round on 4 October with 47.03 per cent to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's 45.16 per cent, defying pollsters who had the leftist incumbent ahead. Datafolha's final poll has the pair tied at 50 per cent each. No candidate who trailed after a first round has ever come back to win a Brazilian runoff. Almost 160 million people are eligible to vote, and results are expected within hours of polls closing.

Jair Bolsonaro is serving a 27-year coup sentence under house arrest after his 2022 defeat.

Flávio has vowed to 'change the constitution and re-democratise this country'.

President Donald Trump hailed Flávio's first-round win as a 'very big' victory.
