Breaking Away Oscar nominee Barbara Barrie, 95, dies by medically assisted suicide in New York after a terminal cancer diagnosis

Barbara Barrie, the Oscar-nominated actress best known for playing a devoted mother in 'Breaking Away', chose to end her life under New York State's Medical Aid in Dying law at her Manhattan home on Wednesday, aged 95. Her representative confirmed the death was medically assisted following a terminal cancer diagnosis, describing Barrie as a proponent and advocate of the law signed by Governor Kathy Hochul earlier this year. The news was first shared by her daughter, actress and writer Jane Harnick.
The New York law allows terminally ill adults with a prognosis of six months or less to request life-ending medication, subject to strict eligibility safeguards.
Barrie's 1979 'Breaking Away' performance earned her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination, though she lost to Meryl Streep for 'Kramer vs. Kramer'.
She also won Best Actress at Cannes in 1964 for 'One Potato, Two Potato' and received a Tony nomination for the original Broadway cast of Stephen Sondheim's 'Company'.
