Breaking Away Oscar nominee Barbara Barrie, 95, ends her life with medical assistance in New York after terminal cancer diagnosis
Barbara Barrie, who once said she only moved to New York for a boyfriend and stumbled into acting almost by accident, died aged 95 on Wednesday.
Barbara Barrie, the Oscar-nominated actress best known for playing mothers on stage and screen, died at her Manhattan home on Wednesday following a terminal cancer diagnosis, with daughter Jane Harnick confirming the death was medically assisted. Barrie had also lived with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, an incurable lung disease she disclosed in 2014. She was 95.
Barrie earned her Oscar nod as the supportive mother in 1979's 'Breaking Away', losing to Meryl Streep's 'Kramer vs. Kramer' win.
She won Best Actress at the 1965 Cannes Film Festival for interracial drama 'One Potato, Two Potato' and received a Tony nomination for Sondheim's 'Company'.
Co-star Shaun Cassidy paid tribute, thanking Barrie for her 'wisdom, kindness and boundless talent'.
