Brexit battle looms as poll finds 56 per cent would vote to rejoin the EU after Burnham opened the door
Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who has expressed a desire to see Britain back in the EU "in his lifetime," with his wife Marie-France van Heel at a Diwali celebration at 10 Downing Street.A data graphic showing 73 per cent of under-35s backing EU membership, a figure former Labour leader Neil Kinnock called evidence of "continually growing support" that will only expand.
An Ipsos Mori poll puts support for rejoining the EU among likely voters at 63 per cent, a four-point rise since May, while opposition has dropped three points to just 30 per cent. Former Tory minister Nick Boles said it was "clear" Burnham "speaks for a majority" on Brexit, and Neil Kinnock predicted the figures would grow further as older Leave voters die off.
Even 16 per cent of Reform voters now favour rejoining, though 76 per cent still want to remain outside the EU.
Close to half of respondents want a referendum held before the next election, yet Burnham has ruled out reversing Brexit during this parliament.
The poll emerges as Burnham readies himself to press for a tighter EU relationship at a Brussels summit on November 20.
