Britain gains an extra hour in bed as clocks go back overnight and British Summer Time ends for winter

The switch returns Britain to Greenwich Mean Time, bringing darker afternoons and brighter mornings. The Cumbria Clock Company is tasked with resetting Big Ben, which Mark Crangle calls 'the most iconic clock in the country'. The idea began with Edwardian builder William Willett's 1907 pamphlet 'The Waste Of Daylight'. Willett died in 1915, a year before the Summer Time Act passed.

Nearly half of Gen Z and Millennials suffer a mood dip, against 22 per cent of Boomers.

Crangle once put a Seaham clock forwards instead of back: 'You only make that mistake once.'

Parliament rejected Willett's plan five times before wartime fuel shortages forced it through.
