Britain is to pour £100m of taxpayers' cash into a 'world-first' AI pandemic lab backed by OpenAI and Anthropic

US tech giants OpenAI and Anthropic will put up to £200 million into the unit, giving it a total budget of up to £300 million. Chancellor John Healey says the lab will use AI to develop medical 'countermeasures' against new pathogens. He will set out more detail in Wednesday's Budget. A separate £120 million is going to Britain's AI Security Institute to set safety standards.

AI minister Kanishka Narayan hailed the lab as a 'major new global institution'.

Healey promises a 'distinctively British' approach and says he understands the 'concerns of working people'.

The plans include £10 million a year to study how AI will change industry, amid fears of job losses.
