Britain is to spend £100m of taxpayers' money on a 'world first' AI lab to fight future pandemics

US tech giants OpenAI and Anthropic are pledging up to £200m in AI model credits to the new AI Biosecurity Lab. A further £120m will go to Britain's AI Security Institute. A £70m Nerv centre will hunt cyber threats after a PHP security flaw knocked 32 government services offline. Healey will set out the full plans at Wednesday's Budget, though the lab's exact remit is yet to emerge.

AI minister Kanishka Narayan says the lab will be a 'major new global institution'.

Healey promises a 'distinctively British' approach that 'doesn't leave workers behind'.

£10m a year will go towards studying how AI will change jobs and industry.
