Workers removed plaques and signage from the British Consulate General in East Jerusalem overnight as Israel's 30-day shutdown order expired this morning. At dawn, the British flag remained raised above the building. Staff will now be redirected to the main UK embassy in Tel Aviv. Established in 1838, the consulate handles UK relations with Palestinians in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza.
Israel issued the closure order after Labour announced sanctions and a trade ban on goods from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
Britain made efforts to keep the consulate open, including sending its top national security adviser to Israel last week for talks, but Israel refused to relent.
The consulate predates the State of Israel by more than a century, giving its forced closure particular resonance as a symbol of the two countries' deteriorating relations.
