More than 500 regional aerodromes, airfields and helipads across Britain are being exploited by criminal gangs to funnel drugs, weapons, cash and illegal migrants into the country unchecked, a new RUSI report has found. Nearly one in five are receiving unscheduled international flights that bypass the rigorous customs controls of major airports. Authorities have already seized 500kg of cocaine at Farnborough Airport and £12 million of heroin and cocaine from a helicopter in Kent and Surrey.
Four illegal migrants were discovered being smuggled into Deenethorpe Airfield in Northamptonshire, with drones expected to make trafficking even more viable.
Shadow home secretary Chris Philp accused Labour of lacking the will to act, saying criminal gangs are 'finding new ways to bring drugs and illegal immigrants into our country.'
Philp said Prime Minister Andy Burnham 'doesn't have the backbone to face down his left-wing backbenchers and get a grip on the problem.'
