Britain's gas storage has fallen from 93% to 72% since 2023, yet National Gas insists winter supply is 'sufficient'

Storage levels fell after Centrica stopped injecting gas into the Rough facility last year. Andrew Bowie, the shadow energy secretary, accused Ofgem of having 'sneaked out' a warning that peak-day winter demand may go unmet, citing declining North Sea production as a contributing factor. Ofgem's worst-case scenario combines a severe cold snap with the loss of Britain's largest gas source. A new consultation has been launched to prevent capacity reductions on a European pipeline.

Kemi Badenoch said Britain 'might not be able to handle a single peak day'.

NESO projects that Britain will be a net electricity importer for the duration of the winter.

Centrica warned the UK holds 12 days of gas, against 123 in the Netherlands.
