Asking rents hit record highs across Britain as London landlords demand £2,825 a month on average

Average monthly asking rents outside London have topped £1,400 for the first time ever, while London has surged to a new record of £2,825 a month, according to Rightmove's latest figures. The data lays bare a deepening affordability crisis hitting renters across the country, with supply shrinking even as demand grows.

London's available rental homes are down 9% year-on-year while renter demand has risen 6%, tightening the squeeze on tenants.

Rightmove's Matt Smith said rental price growth has stabilised compared with a recent market peak, but affordability pressures remain acute.

Outside the capital, renters face crossing the £1,400-a-month threshold for the first time — a milestone that would have seemed unthinkable a decade ago.
