The UK is making a last-ditch push to stop Israel closing its East Jerusalem consulate before a Thursday deadline, with up to 27 Israeli diplomats reportedly facing ejection from London if the mission shuts. The consulate — first established in 1838 — faces closure after Israel gave Britain 30 days to withdraw its staff following UK sanctions on illegal West Bank settlements. National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell made an undisclosed visit to Israel last week but left without a deal.

The 30-day window expires Thursday, affecting around 30 British diplomats and their families based at the Sheikh Jarrah consulate.

Former British ambassador to Israel Matthew Gould warned that expelling the bulk of Israeli diplomats would inflict 'grievous damage' on defence, security and technology ties.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar had accused Britain of meddling in Israel's general election, held this month, when the sanctions were first announced.
