British Army turns away 200 recruits a day despite troop numbers falling to a historic low

Almost 74,000 Army applications were rejected in 2024/25 — a figure roughly 20,000 higher than the year before — even as troop numbers have fallen to their lowest level on record. Total applications exceeded 162,000, a rise of over 40 per cent, yet tens of thousands were filtered out before completing the process, laying bare a dysfunctional recruitment system that is turning away willing volunteers amid a deepening manning crisis.

More than 32,000 applicants were screened out on medical grounds alone, with the rejections spanning psoriasis, diabetes and severe food allergies among other conditions.

Nearly 22,000 Commonwealth applications were discarded because of caps on foreign recruits, despite Commonwealth candidates accounting for 41 per cent of regular applications.

Over 360 hopefuls were turned away on account of tattoos or piercings, even though the Army loosened its rules on visible tattoos more than a decade ago.
