John Agner, a retired wood carver living on the outskirts of the village of Verlus near Toulouse, was found with severe head injuries at his home in the early hours of September 26 after police chased his stolen vehicle to a dead end in Mont-de-Marsan. Two men have now been charged, with prosecutors identifying the main suspect as a 32-year-old local with 21 prior convictions.

The 32-year-old faces charges of robbery accompanied by violence resulting in death after six men were arrested in a joint operation.

He is also accused of a separate attempted murder last week involving a woman in her 70s, who was smothered in her home and had her car stolen.

A second local man, aged 26, is also charged in connection with Agner's death; both are held in custody awaiting trial.
