A 54-year-old British man lost his life while swimming at Crystal Bay Beach on Nusa Penida island near Bali on Sunday after he failed to return to a meeting point he had arranged with his family and their driver. Police said water in his lungs triggered cardiac arrest. He was pronounced dead at Griya Penida Medical Clinic following a search and rescue operation that pulled him from the water.

The man had been on a sightseeing tour of Nusa Penida with his family when he got into difficulty; the driver had given the group an hour to explore the beach.

Klungkung Police spokesperson I Dewa Nyoman Alit Purnawibawa confirmed the victim was a British citizen vacationing with his family.

A second British tourist, aged 60, also died after being pulled unconscious from the sea off Kato Gouves beach in Crete on Thursday; an autopsy is due to establish his cause of death.
