British tourist, believed to be around 40, dies after plunging down a three-storey stairwell at a Tarragona hostel

A British man lost his balance on a staircase at the Tarragona Hostel in Tarragona city centre at around 1am on Sunday and fell the equivalent of three storeys. A doctor living in the building rushed to help but could not save him, and paramedics were unable to revive him at the scene. Police say the death is not being treated as a crime, with initial findings pointing to an accident.

The man had travelled to Tarragona from Barcelona for a weekend getaway with a British friend living there.

Catalan regional police, the Mossos d'Esquadra, have opened an investigation, with a post-mortem and witness interviews set to establish the exact circumstances.
