Burnham insists his net zero drive is 'unwavering' despite approving Jackdaw gas while Tories demand Rosebank go-ahead too

Prime Minister Andy Burnham says gas from Jackdaw, located 150 miles east of Aberdeen, will begin warming homes this winter and raise domestic output by around 6%. Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh approved the project on Wednesday, ending years of uncertainty that included a legal challenge. Burnham argues the decision will safeguard hundreds of Scottish jobs and contribute nearly £3bn to the economy. Even so, he remains committed to blocking any new North Sea licences.

Some Labour backbenchers and environmentalists criticised the decision to approve the field.

Burnham calls oil and gas a 'bridge' to the 2050 net zero target.

He warns the climate crisis is 'here, on our doorstep'.
