Burnham is to double rough sleeping cash to £874m while Tories say he failed to fix the problem in Manchester
Rough sleeping has reached record levels under Labour, shadow communities secretary Katie Lam says, as Andy Burnham prepares to host a Downing Street summit and £874m in total funding looms.
LBC presenter Nick Ferrari calculated the package at roughly £190,000 for each of the estimated 4,000 rough sleepers, telling Cabinet Office Minister Sally Jameson: 'We could buy them all houses.' Jameson insisted the figure is not a cost per person. Prime Minister Andy Burnham hosts a Downing Street rough sleeping summit today. Chancellor John Healey is due to confirm the extra £432m in Wednesday's Budget.
Burnham pledged in 2017 to end rough sleeping in Greater Manchester by 2020, but numbers later rose.
Shadow communities secretary Katie Lam accused him of wasting taxpayers' money on 'empty promises'.
A Centre for Social Justice study reportedly found foreign nationals make up half of London's rough sleepers.
