Burnham warns of a 'winter of greater flooding' as Storm Austen leaves 16,000 homes in the South West without power

Andy Burnham flatly denied that the Government is behind the curve on civil preparedness. His 'be ready' campaign calls on households to stock three days' worth of essential supplies. Storm Boelo is now approaching, bringing an amber wind warning in force for 24 hours from 9pm tonight. The warning covers Scotland, Northern Ireland's north coast, Cumbria and Northumberland, where gusts of up to 80mph are possible on exposed coasts.

Storm Austen recorded a peak of 76mph at St Mary's Airport on the Isles of Scilly.

More than 5,000 of the homes left without power were on the priority services register.

Burnham was dismissive of Angela Rayner's joke about sauvignon blanc and mascara in her kit.
