Abdul El-Sayed wins in Michigan to become the first Muslim US senator and tells Trump to 'call me Senator'
"MICHIGAN, WE DID IT!" Abdul El-Sayed celebrates his projected U.S, in a picture posted on X by Fox News.
Abdul El-Sayed, 42, a former Detroit public health official and son of Egyptian immigrants, defeated Republican Mike Rogers with roughly 52% of the vote to 46%, with the Associated Press calling the race at 2:27am EST. El-Sayed's grassroots campaign centred on Medicare for All, a wealth tax on billionaires, and ending US military aid to Israel, defeating Rogers despite Trump's backing and millions in AIPAC spending against him.
Democrats also seized control of both the House and Senate in a sweeping midterm rout, delivering a crushing blow to Trump's agenda.
Rogers had sought to portray El-Sayed as a religious extremist, with Trump calling him a 'jihadist' at rallies — slurs El-Sayed directly addressed in his victory speech.
El-Sayed taunted JD Vance with 'JD, habibi, there is this delicious irony in the fact that you're constitutionally obligated to swear me in in January.'
