Camden Council bans cars from Camden High Street for good, just days after Oxford Street was pedestrianised

Camden High Street, where Camden Council's 18-month pedestrianisation trial recorded a 14.4 per cent drop in harmful NO2 levels and zero collisions, is now permanently closed to cars.

Camden Council has made the pedestrianisation of Camden High Street permanent, following an 18-month trial launched in May 2025. The stretch between Britannia Junction and the junctions with Jamestown Road and Hawley Crescent is now car, bus, taxi and bicycle-free. A consultation this summer saw 57% of respondents back the permanent ban, with NO2 levels down 14.4% and zero collisions recorded during the trial.

The pedestrianised zone could eventually extend all the way to Camden Lock Bridge.

Camden Council says business spending has held firm at pre-trial levels, dismissing fears the ban would hurt traders.

A £1 million investment in Community Safety Officer patrols and a thorough clean-up of the high street are also planned.
