Canada bars Russia from the world junior ice hockey championships after six countries threaten a boycott over the Ukraine war

Canadian the Prime Minister announced the ban, declaring Russia will not be permitted to compete at the World Junior Championships hosted in Canada, as a growing coalition of nations refuses to accept the sport court's ruling lifting the competition ban. The decision came after Norway, Finland, Sweden and others threatened to walk out entirely, forcing organisers' hands.

A sports court had previously lifted the ban on Russia competing internationally, triggering the boycott wave from at least six nations.

Sweden joined Norway and Finland in the boycott threat before Canada's intervention effectively resolved the standoff by simply barring Russian participation from the host nation's event.

Canada's move is framed as resistance to Russia's broader reintegration into international sport while the Ukraine war continues.
