Canadian tourist who stole a Las Vegas hotel flamingo after downing '30 to 40 beers' faces four years in prison

A Nevada jury convicted Mitchell Fairbarn, 34, of felony and misdemeanour animal cruelty on Monday after about five hours of deliberation. He snatched Peachy, a 27-year-old Chilean flamingo, from the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino habitat at 5am on 3 March. Police found the bird bloodied, with wing injuries and seven or eight feathers missing. He is due to be sentenced on 1 December.

Fairbarn told jurors he grabbed Peachy as a 'silly pranky joke' for a photo.

Peachy's vet says the bird is now more anxious and nervous during checkups.

The Ontario father of three remains under house arrest and cannot return to Canada.
