Care home boss struck off after conning 'vulnerable' 99-year-old out of £750,000

Rebecca Burwood, deputy manager at Bryn Yr Haul Care Home in Mold, North Wales, called the isolated pensioner 'nana' and used that relationship to drain her life savings over six years. She secured Lasting Power of Attorney in 2018 without telling the home, then persuaded the woman to transfer her £400,000 house to her before placing her in the care facility she managed.
The stolen money went on cosmetic surgery, a car, a campervan, and a home extension.
Burwood pulled £160,000 in cash from ATMs alone; police opened an investigation but closed it after the pensioner refused to make a complaint, believing that Burwood had 'learned from her mistakes'.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council tribunal found that the woman had endured years of 'coercion' and 'emotional blackmail' at Burwood's hands, and removed her from the nursing register.
