Care home deputy manager struck off after stealing £370,000 and a £400,000 house from 99-year-old 'nana' in her care

Rebecca Louise Burwood, deputy manager at Bryn Yr Haul Care Home in Mold, Flintshire, covertly acquired Lasting Power of Attorney over a frail 99-year-old woman and plundered her life savings across six years. Burwood, who referred to the pensioner as 'nana', drained £370,000 in cash and transferred the woman's £400,000 home into her own name, then had the elderly woman placed in the care home in 2018. The Nursing and Midwifery Council's Fitness to Practise Committee removed her from the nursing register after concluding she had carried out sustained financial and emotional abuse between 2017 and 2023.
The victim, left with no family and socially isolated following a fall, had nobody to shield her when Burwood moved in and 'weaponised' her trust.
Burwood used the stolen money on cosmetic surgery, a car registered in her name, a campervan, and a £61,000 home extension — which she claimed was built so the pensioner could live with her during a future lockdown.
Officers looked into the matter but dropped the case after the victim, who believed Burwood had 'learned from her mistakes', declined to lodge a formal complaint.
