Mark Carney is credited with defeating Alberta's separatist push after three in four voters chose to stay in Canada

Unofficial results put the vote to remain in Canada at 75.2 per cent against 24.8 per cent for a second, binding secession ballot. Premier Danielle Smith called the referendum, and Ottawa had no formal role in it. Prime Minister Mark Carney, raised in Edmonton, won over the province with a pipeline promise and rallies in Calgary and Edmonton. He had branded the vote a 'dangerous bluff'.

Calgary professor Duane Bratt: 'Mark Carney is the most popular politician in the province.'

On polling day, President Donald Trump told a Kansas rally he would let Canadians 'keep ice hockey', then said 'We're only kidding'.

US ambassador Pete Hoekstra accused Carney of straining ties: 'We're not in a trade war.'
