Camden High Street is to ban cars for good after an 18-month trial, just days after Oxford Street went traffic-free

Camden Council has made the pedestrianisation of Camden High Street permanent following an 18-month trial that began in May 2025, with 57 per cent of respondents in a summer consultation backing the move. The change covers the stretch from Britannia Junction to the junctions with Jamestown Road and Hawley Crescent, with temporary barriers to be replaced by permanent ones in early 2027.
Camden Council recorded a 14.4 per cent drop in harmful NO2 levels and zero collisions on the street during the nine months of the trial.
A £1 million investment in Community Safety Officer patrols and a planned 'deep clean' of the high street will accompany the permanent change.
The council could eventually extend pedestrianisation all the way to Camden Lock Bridge, which draws around 250,000 visitors a week to Camden Market.
