The Royal Courts of Justice, London. Mr Justice Nicklin warned that online speculation gives nobody the right to name PPT, a celebrity detained in a psychiatric hospital after two recent suicide attempts.

A celebrity identified only as PPT is pursuing a permanent injunction in the High Court against ITN and Guardian News and Media. He wants to prevent publication of allegations that he exploited his fame to engage in "inappropriate and exploitative sexual activities with a large number of girls and young women," all of which he denies. His legal team described the case as "highly exceptional," arguing that disclosure would be "devastating" and inflict "such profound mental anguish" that he would attempt to end his life. ITN and GNM are contesting the injunction, maintaining that their investigation serves a strong public interest.

Lawyers for the media organisations told the court that more than 100 people were interviewed during a "wide-ranging and rigorous investigation," among them over 30 who gave first-hand accounts.

PPT has made two suicide attempts in recent months and "remains seriously ill," the court heard.

Mr Justice Nicklin cautioned that online speculation, "however confidently expressed or widely repeated," gives nobody the right to name PPT.
